The 10 Best Travel Mugs 2023: the Top Reusable Coffee Cups Reviewed.

As we become increasingly aware of the devastating impact single-use options have on our planet, travel mugs and reusable coffee cups have become a must-have. Travel mugs are great for everyday coffee cravings, with many coffee shops now offering discounts on drinks if you present your own reusable cup, instead of using one of theirs.

There is nothing worse for those who are constantly on the move than a room-temperature cup of coffee. Given that disposable cups are super wasteful and your usual at-home coffee mug is far from practical for taking on the go, a travel coffee mug is an absolute sustainable essential for keeping your morning beverage at the ideal temperature (hot or cold!).

With travel mugs seeing such a huge surge in popularity, there is no shortage to choose from on the market. This can make it incredibly difficult to know which is the best reusable coffee cup to choose. To help you out, I have put together a list of my top 10 travel mugs and reusable coffee cups of 2023.

What Makes the Best Travel Mug?

So, how do you know what to look for when buying a travel coffee mug? There are a number of key features to check for when deciding which reusable coffee cup to opt for.

  • Locking lid: unless you want to find mysterious coffee puddles in the bottom of your bag or seeping through your computer keyboard, you should look for a travel mug with a secure locking mechanism.
  • Stainless steel: you want to ensure that your travel mug is sturdy and stainless steel is guaranteed to shrug off much of whatever your daily commute chooses to throw its way.
  • Thermal qualities: if you want your coffee kept hot or cold for long periods of time, then you will want to opt for a thermos flask option. Maybe you want to use your coffee cup for more than just commuting to work – perhaps hiking up a mountain or camping in the wilderness.
  • Size & design: the purpose of a travel mug is to be able to transport it easily. Therefore, you want to make sure you opt for a reusable mug that is easy to hold and store in your bag.
  • Washability: you should check to see if the travel coffee mug is dishwasher-safe. If the cup needs to be hand-washed, then ensure you can easily get into it with a sponge or you might need to invest in a bottle brush.

My Top 10 Picks of Reusable Travel Coffee Mugs:

Zojirushi’s Travel Thermos Coffee Mug | £20.68

Having the luxury of enjoying a piping hot coffee during your work commute or halfway up a mountain is priceless. However, there is always that fear in the back of your head that it will leak all over your bag, or worse, you’ll spill it on yourself. With many travel mugs, that is a very likely scenario. However, the Zojirushi’s travel thermos mug promises to take care of that problem.

With its vacuum insulated, multi-walled body, Zojirushi’s travel mug keeps your beverage steaming for an unbelievable 6 hours – long enough to survive tiresome morning meetings or long, painful hikes. This coffee flask features a handy safety lock on the lid to prevent any spillages or leaks. For those busy commutes to work, the lid can be easily flipped open with one hand, leaving you with a free hand to scan an oyster card or grab your bag. This thermos travel flask is slim enough to fit in the cup holder of your car or the side pocket of your bag for convenient transport wherever you go.

Ello Campy 16Oz Coffee Mug | £32.30

This wilderness-inspired travel mug is the must-have option for the outdoor-enthusiast. This rugged and durable take on the classic enamel mug, is sure to stand the wear and tear of any adventure. The Ello Campy 18oz vacuum insulated stainless steel travel mug will prove to be the ideal camping companion for any coffee-loving explorer.

One major strength of the Campy travel mug is its seemingly fail-safe lid. The lid on the Campy coffee cup features a discreet suction cup that seals off the lid, causing it to become completely airtight. This means you can throw it into your backpack without fear of it leaking. The stainless steel exterior of this travel coffee mug means that it will simply absorb the shock of any drops, without suffering any dents or scratches. This travel coffee cup also has a great design, with a traditional enamel look on the outside, a cork handle and a decent size. However, it is not recommended that you put this travel mug in the dishwasher, so you might need to invest in a bottle brush to get to the hard-to-reach places.

Featuring a simple yet sleek design, the Klean Kanteen TKWide lies somewhere between a coffee mug and a water bottle, making it ideal for those who need hot and cold to quench their thirst. This vacuum insulated travel bottle gives you plenty of liquid refreshment options.

The cafe cap lid of the TKWide insulated travel mug is great for sipping any type of beverage from, without inconveniently dribbling down your front like many transportable coffee mugs. However, make sure you seal the lid properly or you might experience some leakage. This travel coffee mug features a super useful carrying handle which locks down when not in use. This makes it really easy to carry around or store in your backpack. With a 20 oz capacity, this vacuum insulated coffee mug is ideal for those who require endless amounts of coffee to get through the day. The Hydro Flask coffee mug is a rugged-looking stainless steel travel flask that keeps hot drinks steaming hot and cold drinks icy cold. Perfect for those who like to sip their refreshments out of a proper mug, the Hydro Flask travel mug does a great job at imitating your home coffee.

Hydro Flask utilises Tempshield technology, with a unique double-wall vacuum insulation that maintains temperature for hours on end. Frank Green Ceramic Reusable Coffee Cup | £27.99

The Frank Green reusable coffee cup looks like the Apple of all travel mugs. With a super smart and stylish design, this travel coffee cup is ideal for anyone who wants their mug to look as good as it performs. If you’re looking for an instagrammable travel mug, then this is the one for you.

The award-winning design of the Frank Green ceramic travel mug might make you question whether it’s all for show. However, don’t judge it too quickly – the Frank Green reusable coffee mug is more than just a pretty face. The body of the travel flask is made from premium grade 304 stainless steel and ceramic. This is a winning combination in my books as the ceramic inner layer allows you to enjoy a home coffee flavour, while the stainless steel exterior offers excellent insulation. The plastic used for the lid is Tritan, a copolymer that is BPA-free to protect you from any potentially harmful contaminents. The only downside of this ceramic-stainless steel combo is the resulting weight. Although the award-winning design is super sleek and compact, the materials used makes this travel coffee mug a little heavier than others.

YETI Rambler Travel Coffee Mug | £29.99

Another one for aesthetic-lovers is the YETI Rambler stainless steel coffee mug. But, does the performance of this travel mug do it’s good looks justice?

At first glance, the design of the Rambler travel coffee cup is great. It comes in a variety of fun colours – including seafoam green, prickly pear pink and granite grey – and has a clean, modern feel to it. Of all the travel mugs featured on this list, the YETO Rambler is the most similar in shape to a standard coffee mug, and it is certainly more durable. The mug handle is a great feature as it makes it easier to hold than flask-shaped mugs, minimising hand fatigue. The travel coffee mug comes with a plastic lid with a rubber gasket which ensures a tight and secure fit. This would ensure no spills or leakages if it wasn’t so difficult to close the lid fully. If you want to guarantee a leak-free drink, you have to further invest in a YETI MagSlider Lid which I was a little frustrated to find is sold separately for an additional £10.

Bru Insulated Travel Mug | £17.99

If you’re a little clumsy and can’t trust yourself not to drop your travel mug on the regular, then the Bru insulated coffee cup is the sturdy option that you need. The Bru reusable coffee cup appears to have some sort of super power, being so robust it can survive pretty much anything.

Built to last, the Bru travel coffee cup has been made from durable, shatter-proof, high-grade stainless steel. Whether you’re running late for work or stumble on your way up a mountain, this travel mug can handle anything you throw at it. Not only is this coffee cup incredibly well-insulated, allowing you to drink hot or cold, it also doesn’t ‘sweat’ so you won’t have to deal with condensation on the outside or a puddle underneath. The design of the Bru travel coffee mug is great for comfortably holding in your hand and the small, compact size makes it ideal for slipping in your bag or sliding under your local coffee shop machine. Despite it’s small size, it has the perfect 340 ml capacity for a standard brew. The Bru cup even features a large opening which allows you to fully appreciate that freshly brewed coffee small in the morning.

Stojo Collapsible Travel Coffee Cup | £10.80

The ultimate space-saving reusable coffee cup. The Stojo collapsible travel mug is a fun and innovative as it looks. With the cup’s body conveniently collapsing into the lid, this travel coffee cup is ideal for those who don’t have much space in their bag.

The Stojo collapsible coffee cup is a neat little design that adds something different to the hoard of travel mugs on the market. The ability of this travel mug to collapse into itself means that it can fit into any backpack or briefcase. However, this clever collapsible element means Stojo have had to compromise on other design features which would enhance the drinking experience. To be able to collapse, this reusable coffee cup is made of a flabby silicone material which has to be gripped very tightly in order to prevent it from squishing. It isn’t too difficult to imagine the cup being squeezed to hard and boiling hot coffee spilling all over you. Yet, the silicone exterior of this travel mug does mean that it is dishwasher safe and easily fits in standard car cup holders. So, while the Stojo isn’t perfect, it does offer a truly portable reusable beverage vessel.

Stanley Trigger-Action Travel Coffee Mug | £32.99

Manufactured by the pioneers in vacuum insulated flasks since 1913, I had high hopes for the Stanley trigger-action travel coffee mug. This one-handed travel mug features a single push which lets you open, drink and close this flask without ever having to unscrew a top.

The Stanley one-handed travel mug is an aesthetically-pleasing, no-frills reusable flask, available in a range of colours, including classic hammertone green, red or navy. Made from an incredibly hard-wearing 18/8 stainless steel body and a BPA-free plastic screw-on-lid, the construction of this travel coffee mug is perfect for more demanding activities. The incredible vacuum insulation ensures that the outer surface of the coffee flask remains condensation-free, and with a fully leak-proof lid, you aren’t likely to find any wet patches in your bag. The lid of the Stanley stainless steel coffee mug is what makes it stand out. The intelligently designed mug lid features a handy trigger mechanism that makes drinking with one hand easy. So, although it doesn’t have a handle, it can easily be held while on the move.

Contigo Autoseal West Loop Vacuum Insulated Travel Mug | £27.99

The perfect travel mug for an urban commuter. If you like to sip your tea or coffee on your way to work, you’ll love the anti-spill, single-handed operation of Contigo’s Autoseal West Loop stainless steel travel mug.

On first impressions, the Contigo’s outward appearance is fairly standard for a travel coffee mug, but there are a handful of neat features hidden within. Like many of the travel mugs on this list, the Contigo is vacuum insulated which means that it keeps your drinks piping hot or icy cold for hours at a time. Contigo refers to this as their Thermalock system and claims that the mug can keep drinks hot for seven whole hours. Yet, this travel mug’s most sophisticated features are hidden inside the lid. Rather than having a flip top like many other coffee mugs, this flask features a small hole with auto-seal technology. This handy feature means that the hole stays closed unless you press and hold the lid’s button, adding complete assurance against spills and leaks. And, if that wasn’t enough to put your mind at ease, the lid has a second lock that can be depressed, preventing the spout button from accidentally being engaged. The design of the Contigo coffee mug is also exceptionally convenient, with the slightly concave shape making it super easy to hold.
